To the Parents of Potential and Current Delta Sigma Phi Members:
As
the parent of two students currently attending Alabama, I realize you may have
some concerns about your son being in a fraternity. I would like to address some of them in this letter.
We
pride ourselves on treating all members with respect and enforcing a “No
Hazing” policy. By “No Hazing” we mean that your son will not be placed in
physical danger and not be required to do anything that is demeaning to his
character. The safety and well-being of all members
is extremely important to us.
COSTS:
We
do not have the financial obligations of many other fraternities; this allows
us to keep our dues much lower.
Also, dues are voted upon by the brothers each semester and there is a
deliberate effort to remain one of the most affordable fraternities on
campus.
The
cost for Delta Sigma Phi membership is extremely reasonable. A member could live in our fraternity
house (a single-occupancy room) and pay all total dues for LESS THAN ONLY THE
COST OF LIVING in Riverside, Bryant, or Lakeside residence halls. That is truly a great
value! Upon request we will be
happy to provide the actual prices for comparison.
ACADEMICS:
We
are determined that fraternity membership will not adversely affect grades of
our members. Our grade point average is currently higher than the men’s overall
average at the University – and we were recently recognized for having the 2nd
highest pledge class grade point average in Spring 2009.
There
are mandatory study hours for new members and those who earn less than a 2.5
g.p.a. Tutoring is also available
for all members if requested.
Scholarships
are awarded from an alumni fund to honor brothers and new members who have high
grades and have fully participated in the fraternity. These amounts typically range from $500 - $1,200 each
semester.
SUPERVISION:
A
University employee serves as Chapter Advisor for the group and also has a
residence in the fraternity house.
He meets regularly with the members and is present at most fraternity
functions. There is also an active
alumni board which is comprised of local alumni serving as mentors to the
students. I am one of the advisors
on this board responsible for coordinating our housing and growth efforts.
FRATERNITY
ACTIVITIES:
In
addition to the social events that take place, Delta Sigma Phi is committed to
campus and community service. This
enables our members to become more well-rounded as well as giving us positive
exposure in the local area. Our
most notable event was last year’s Miss Sorority Row pageant which raised
several thousand dollars for Red Cross and other charities.
